Routine Dental Treatment

A dental surgery is located within the BFC (SE). A visiting dental team consisting of a RN Dentist and RN Dental Nurse will visit approximately 3 times per year. This is usually April, July and November.

Each visit consists of 3 weeks clinic time during which time the priority is to maintain military dental fitness state. This is followed by clinic times that will be reserved for dental checks on children (up to 18 yrs). Dental checks on children are free as under current NHS policy.

Dental treatment undertaken by the visiting dental team on adults will be charged at current NHS Banding Charges:

  • Band 1: £16.50.
    This charge includes an examination, diagnosis and preventive advice. If necessary, it also includes X-rays, scale and polish and planning for further treatment.

  • Band 2: £45.60.
    This charge includes all the necessary treatment covered by the £16.50 charge, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment or extractions.

  • Band 3: £198.
    This charge includes all the necessary treatment that is covered by the £16.50 and £45.60 charges, plus more complex procedures, such as crowns, dentures and bridges.

There are exemption rules for equivalent to those in force in the NHS who are exempt from paying MOD charges:

  1. Those under 18 years.

  2. Those under 19 years and in full-time education.

  3. Women who are pregnant or who have had a baby in the 12 weeks prior to treatment being initiated.

  4. Those receiving (or a partner of someone receiving) income support, income based job-seeker allowance or Pension Credit Guarantee Card.

  5. Those named on a valid HC2 Certificate.

Emergency Dental Treatment: Naples

Patients requiring emergency dental treatment when the visiting dental team are not available will be referred to an approved local dentist in Arco Felice. Appointments can be requested through the BFC (SE). There is no Service transport for dental appointments.

The local dentist has a direct billing arrangement in place with the Defence Dental Service (Germany). NHS banded costs will apply for dependants who are not exempt from NHS dental charges.

Emergency Dental Treatment: ISODETs

Local approved dentists are available for the Italian ISODETs. Your local Support Unit personnel will have details on this.

All patients will be required to gain an initial consultation to alleviate pain. Consequent treatment must be authorised by Defence Dental Service (Germany) prior to treatment being undertaken. Contact details for Defence Dental Service (Germany) is; 0049 2161 908 2320.
